Evaluation of tomato varieties for yield characteristics and resistance to bacterial wilt.

Introduction
Tomatoes are one of the important horticultural crops to Ugandans and the world at large. Nutritionally it is an important source of nutrients both macro and micro. More so, it contributes significantly to well being of the farmers by generating income. However, this crops is diversely affected by ralstonia solanaceae, a bacteria that cause wilt in most of the solanaceous crops. The bacteria can cause 80-100% loss to the farmer. Therefore the horticulture research program is conducting a germplasm evaluation for these crops. As a result, a tomato evaluation project was started in collaboration with the World Islamic Call Society to screen and evaluate tomato varieties for yield characteristics and resistance to bacterial wilt and also initiate sustainable commercial tomato production in selected districts.
